CBD & Meditation: A Powerful Combination

Two big buzzwords on the wellness circuit are more than just trendy, they’re scientifically proven to change your life by helping you naturally keep stress and anxiety at bay. What are they? CBD and meditation!

Each of these tools can be used on its own for stress relief, but they can sometimes be more powerful when used at the same time as part of an anxiety management routine. Here’s a closer look at this life-changing combo and why CBD and meditation work so well together.

CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, an all-natural compound that’s extracted from hemp plants and used to create products for human consumption, like tinctures, oils, and balms, among other things. Unlike its infamous cousin THC, it doesn’t cause psychoactive effects; it’s more well-known for creating a calming sensation in its users, improving sleep, enhancing mood, and reducing pain.

CBD can vary in quality depending on where it’s sourced from. Frosty Roots Farm grows hemp sustainably and processes it into a full-spectrum CBD for the highest quality and the best benefits! (pssst–you can get 20% off your first order of CBD products when you sign up for our email list).

Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid, which is very similar to a molecule humans produce called endocannabinoids. The two are so similar that they almost act interchangeably in the human body. All humans possess an endocannabinoid system, which produces and uses endocannabinoids to regulate bodily processes.

Special receptors in our brains interact with endocannabinoids and cannabinoids (both incredibly similar compounds), which then react with other body systems, including our nervous system. Using CBD can help regulate your nervous system and control stress-inducing hormones, in turn reducing the effects of anxiety!

Meditation is an ancient wellness practice that originated in India around 5,000 B.C.E, and it focuses on using different techniques to help you control your attention and awareness. As a general practice, meditation has been proven to lower stress levels and decrease anxiety. Though it’s sometimes practiced as a ritualistic component of some religions, you don’t have to follow a particular religion in order to meditate and enjoy the benefits.

The goal of meditation is to calm yourself and clear your mind. There are several (read: hundreds) meditation techniques, but it typically involves taking up a relaxed, often seated posture, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breath while turning inward to your thoughts. You can do this for as little as five minutes or as long as you want!

Some methods include visualization, where you attempt to create a mental image of a place, scene, situation, or idea. Some methods involve self-reflection,

Training your attention helps you refocus when your mind starts running wild with anxious thoughts. Similarly, being able to clear your mind can help you solve incoming problems, both of which can naturally help you lower stress levels. Meditation can help ground you and get you back into the present moment. Sometimes anxiety can trigger the fight-or-flight response that humans developed to help us get out of dangerous situations, and meditating when you’re experiencing anxiety can help remind your nervous system that you’re safe and not in immediate physical danger.

CBD can enhance your meditation experience! It can help improve your focus during meditation, which will allow the meditation practice to be more effective and therefore help you achieve a deeper sense of relaxation and clear-headedness or prolong the calm to carry you through the day once you’ve finished meditating.

One thing we love about this duo is that it’s flexible. You can use the CBD whether you’re doing a self-guided solo session or a professionally led meditation. There’s no minimum or maximum time limit. You can also choose your own dosage and administration.  So, whether you prefer roll-ons or tinctures, you can still get the most this combo has to offer.

We’re so glad you asked!

It really couldn’t be easier to combine these two for the ultimate stress-relieving experience. Start between 15-60 minutes before you intend to begin meditating and administer your CBD. Some routes work faster than others so you may have to take this into account when deciding when to use CBD.

Once you’ve taken your CBD, continue going about your routine until you’re ready to start meditating. Turn on some light music, white noise, or guided meditation if desired, and begin your meditation practice! You’ll likely notice that you’re able to “drop in” faster and remain focused for longer periods of time while you’re meditating. You may also feel a sense of relaxation for an extended period of time afterward. Whether you use the combination every once in a while for some extra relief or as a part of your regular routine, you’ll see why we love the way these two tools work together to combat anxiety!

You don’t always have to use both at the same time if you don’t want to! You may choose to use either at different times of the day or week. Both CBD and meditation have each been shown to have anxiety-reducing benefits on their own. You can still get some stress relief when you feel like taking CBD but not meditating, and vice versa. Always honor what your body needs at the moment. Happy stress-relieving!
