Is sleep really that important? Next to our diets and physical activity, sleep is one of the most important contributing factors to our overall well-being…but almost half of adults have trouble falling and staying asleep. If you’re among those who suffer from insomnia or impaired sleep, don’t fret! There are several things you can do to improve your quality of sleep, including incorporating CBD into your nighttime routine.

IS SLEEP REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?

Yes! Sleep is vital to our well-being. When we sleep, our body works to perform a number of critical functions that impact our health in both the short- and long term. Here are 5 important things that happen while we’re counting sheep:

  1. Our hormones are regulated
  2. Our blood pressure decreases
  3. Our brain repairs itself (how cool is that?)
  4. Our short-term memories are converted into long-term memories
  5. Our tissues are repaired and growth takes place

Interesting, right? What’s even more interesting (and possibly a little bit scary) is what happens when we don’t get adequate sleep, especially if our sleep is chronically interrupted or impaired. 

People who don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis are at increased risk for:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart attacks and angina
  • Insulin resistance
  • Impaired cognition
  • Dementia
  • Obesity
  • Stroke

In essence, sleep is kind of a big deal. If you’re not getting enough quality sleep, your quality of life might be impacted. That’s where CBD comes in.

UTILIZING CBD AS A SLEEP AID

Before we dig into the benefits of CBD for sleep, let’s do a rapid-fire refresher course on some CBD basics to make sure we’re all on the same page:

  • CBD is short for cannabidiol, and it’s a type of compound called a cannabinoid that is naturally found in cannabis plants. Cannabis plants contain hundreds of types of cannabinoids, but CBD is one of the most well-known types.
  • We naturally produce similar compounds in our bodies, called endocannabinoids, that share a similar chemical makeup as the cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Humans have an endocannabinoid system that uses endocannabinoids (and cannabinoids, when administered) to regulate our nervous system.
  • Cannabis plants come in hundreds of varieties, but two of the main categories are hemp and marijuana. Both of these plants contain different amounts of CBD (and the amount varies even further when you get into subcategories called strains), but of the two, hemp typically has a higher amount of CBD. Legal CBD comes strictly from hemp plants.
  • CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and combined with other ingredients to create products that are easy for people to use, like CBD edibles, tinctures, oils, balms, lotions, and capsules.
  • CBD and THC (also known as delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) are related, but aren’t the same thing. More on that later.

Now that we’ve brought you up to speed, we can get into the juicy stuff. 

FAQ: IS CBD THE SAME AS THC?

As mentioned earlier, THC and CBD aren’t the same things, though they’re similar. Both are cannabinoids that are naturally found in cannabis plants, but they differ in a few key areas:

 

Psychoactive effects – THC is a psychoactive compound that induces feelings of euphoria, altered perception of time and reality, and increased appetite, among other things. CBD doesn’t cause the same sensations and won’t get users “high” like THC. 

 

Legality and regulations – CBD is federally legal as of 2018 and CBD products can’t contain more than 0.3% THC (an amount so minuscule that it can’t induce a high). THC is not currently federally regulated, instead, the issue of legality falls to the states. 22 states in the US currently allow both recreational and medicinal use of THC. 

 

Benefits for sleep – Studies suggest that although THC may help users fall asleep faster, long-term use or high doses of this cannabinoid may negatively affect users’ sleep routines by reducing the amount of REM sleep they experience. REM sleep is associated with learning, memory, and motor function. The reverse is true of CBD: higher doses of CBD are recommended to help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of sleep.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND CBD AND SLEEP

CBD works by being ingested, absorbed into the skin, absorbed under the tongue, or inhaled and making its way to the bloodstream. From there, it enters our endocannabinoid system (also known as ECS) and interacts with the CB1 receptors in our brains, which aids our central nervous system (CNS) in regulating important functions, including–you guessed it–sleep! 

MANAGING CHRONIC INSOMNIA WITH CBD

The trick to using CBD for sleep is in the dosage. In small doses, CBD can sometimes make users more alert. When the dosage increases, though, it can make users feel drowsy, help them fall asleep faster, and increase the amount of time they spend in deep sleep. This is especially helpful for people with chronic insomnia or other sleep impairment disorders that prevent them from sleeping well on a regular basis.

TIPS FOR GETTING BETTER SLEEP WITH CBD

Using CBD to improve your sleep isn’t as simple as just using an infused product and heading to bed. It works best as a component of a comprehensive sleep routine. Here are some tips for incorporating CBD into your sleep routine:

#1 CHOOSE YOUR CBD CAREFULLY.
